British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
