EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
