The Premier Release of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

Initially, this work may look closer to a difficult academic examination rather than the latest popular music album by a musician whose previous hit featured a global pop star. Split into four different movements and performed in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. The pure daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and complete praise going to the artist. While it's not her first project to alchemize the past and modern styles, the stakes are much greater here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes down like cartoonish force. The song then segues to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm of Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to know—where you will go next."

Almost each track finishes in a completely distinct place than how it started. A track explores the transient nature of fame with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous rhythmic style starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its rough edges.

The Balance Of Art and Accessibility

A key achievement on the album involves navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung primarily in English swells around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals upward. This feat is echoed by a different powerful ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish feast where the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative visionary.
