Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
